I watched Tony Battie and Darven Ham play at Texas tech and got their autograph from a mall in Lubbock Texas. They were just cool as hell back then. Bad ass to watch them play and Ham breaking backboards.
Back then the league was dying for "the next Michael Jordan", and they would anoint guys with that expectation. Vince Carter was another one who suffered from it. And I really think it was hard on those guys trying to live up to being someone other than just themselves.
I forgot Tony Battie. That's how basketball crazy I was back then. I REMEMBER 7 out of the 8 players at the top of that draft. I thought T-Mac went too high, he was in high school! I was wrong, he was the goods. But he didn't look all that great in the all star games.
To be fair he was a high schooler.. so going top ten is legendary. Especially at the time before LBJ, Howard and Bynum went top 10. Kobe wasn’t top ten before him.
